The UV rays of the sun have been proven for decades to be quite harmful to our skin. Some people are more sensitive to the sun than others, but we all need protection from the sun during prolonged periods of exposure or when we may be in a geographical area where the sun’s rays are closer, hence stronger.

In seeking a hat that is rated to block 98% or more of the sun’s UV rays (both UVA and UVB rays), it is essential to understand that specially-woven fabrics are needed to withstand wear and washings and still maintain the non-penetrable qualities needed to keep the UPF 50+ rating.

Items labeled “UPF 50+” on this web site exceed the new national Ultraviolet Protection Factor standards in the United States. The items on this web site that are rated at UPF 50+ are proven to block 98% or more of the UVA and UVB rays of the sun.

BrightSide Marketplace is a top-rated seller on Amazon.com. We offer the same products to you here as we offer on Amazon, but with FREE SHIPPING on all of them. Where possible, we will provide a link to the same product on Amazon and you will be able to read reviews and see what other consumers have had to say about our products.

Polymorphous Light Eruption is a rash on the skin caused by exposure to sunlight. While its cause is largely unknown, it is a condition that does not require treatment as much as it is a condition that is largely preventable.

The condition usually occurs within a day or two after exposure to the sun and lasts for a week or so. While some scholars say that Polymorphous Light Eruption is sometimes passed genetically, no hard proof of that has been shown in clinical research.

It is estimated that around 15% of Americans, heavily concentrated in the northern states, suffer from Polymorphous Light Eruption. While it is not considered a deadly or an aggressive condition, it has been proven that prolonged exposure to the UVA and UVB rays of the sun can cause skin cancer and other conditions that are an immediate danger to ones health.

The UPF rating system is very similar to the system used to rate sunscreens…the SPF system. The Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) measures the penetration of Ultraviolet rays through fabric.

A UPF rating of 50 means that a given piece of fabric allows 1/50 of the UV rays that hit it to penetrate through. This is the same as 98% UV protection.

The garments you see on this web site that are labeled UPF 50 or UPF 50+ are certified to block the sun’s rays as set forth above.

Why the skin tans when exposed to the sun.

The penetration of the sun’s UV rays to the inner layer of the skin produces more melanin. The melanin then moves to the outer layer of the skin and changes it’s tone, now a visible sun tan. Contrary to popular belief, a sun tan is no indicator of good health.
How do you classify different skin types since everyone does not tan or burn in the same manner?

Individuals burn and tan differently for several reasons. Skin type, time of year and amount of sun exposure are a few of the variables. Your skin’s danger of burning can be classified by the table below:

Skin Type I - Burns 100% of the time. Never a tan. Very sensitive to the sun.

Skin Type II - Easily burns. Minimal tanning ability.

Skin Type III - Moderate burns if overexposed. Will tan slowly to a light brown color.

Skin Type IV - Burns lightly. Usually tans to a moderate brown color.

Skin Type V - Hardly ever burns. Often a rich, dark tan.

Skin Type VI - Will not burn. Dark pigmentation provides a deep, dark tan.

Does the kind of sunscreen I use have a great affect on the protection I get?

There are options in sunscreens. You will find sunscreen in several forms, such as lotions, sprays, and gels. Also, some sunscreen are made for specific purposes like use on the scalp, sensitive skin applications and sunscreen for infants and toddlers.

Sunscreen brands are known for their consistency and are used by people worldwide every day.

No matter what type of sunscreen you choose, be sure that you use a sunscreen with a rating of at least SPF 15 and one that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

Ultraviolet rays of the sun are invisible to the human eye and are a form of radiation that can change the structure of skin cells. The three types of UV rays are:

Ultraviolet A (UVA) – The most predominant source of radiation from the sun and can penetrate the upper layer of human skin. Scientists are of the opinion that UVA rays can damage or degrade connective tissues and are a very likely cause of skin cancer.

Ultraviolet B (UVB) – Fortunately, most of the UVB rays emanating from the sun are absorbed by the earth’s ozone layer, giving us every reason to be concerned with ozone issues, but that is a topic for another web site. UVB rays do not penetrate the skin as deeply as do UVA rays, but can be damaging to the skin.

Ultraviolet C (UVC) – This form of solar radiation is dangerously hazardous to our skin. It is fully absorbed by the stratospheric ozone layer. UVC rays do not reach the earth’s surface.

How to protect yourself from the sun’s UV rays:

Try to avoid activities that take you outdoors during the height of the day. The middle part of the day is when the sun’s rays are the strongest. From mid morning to late evening, try to avoid the sun. If you must be out in the sun, wear protective clothing, such as a wide-brimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt, and long pants. We recommend SPF Clothing that will keep your outing in the sun from ruining your skin.
